CINCINNATI -- In what could be
interpreted as a peace gesture, the Cubs have decided not to
reinstall the controversial Wrigley Field windscreens this season,
team sources said.
The dark green screens on the
back of bleacher fences were put up before the 2002 season for
security reasons, according to team officials. Many fans, however,
thought the primary purpose was block the view of rooftop parties
on the buildings on Waveland and Sheffield Avenues.
The team has a lawsuit pending
against the rooftop owners, claiming theft of product.
The Cubs also are negotiating
with the city over the Commission on Landmarks' recommendation
that Wrigley Field be designated a landmark, which would prevent
its owner, Tribune Co., from making any alterations without
city approval.
A decision not to bring back the
windscreens could open the door to improved relations with the
city and rooftop owners.
